Care of Betta Fish: Choosing the Right Habitat

The Betta’s natural home is in the shallow waters of rice paddies, and slow moving streams of Asia. Therefore many fish keepers think that the Betta will survive just fine in a small fish bowl. They neglect to realize that the habitat of the rice paddies has a natural ecosystem. Fresh water carries in essential nutrients and flushes out bacteria. The typical rice paddy is about the size of a large pond.

An artificial environment does not have a natural ecosystem. Small habitats pose the risk of adverse environmental conditions.

Of course your Betta will be happier in a small tank as opposed to the tiny plastic cup or vase he had in the pet store. However, to be really happy your Betta would not only survive but also thrive in a bare minimum of 2 gallons of water per fish.

The size of the tank is only limited by the practical fact that larger tanks require more upkeep. They are a bit more difficult to heat and to keep the water clean. The maximum considered per Betta is about 10 gallons. More than 10 gallons of living space could cause stress since Bettas are territorial and like to command their kingdom.

Tips for successful tank setup:

  • Larger tanks should be wider than deeper. Bettas need access to the surface. Make it easy to get there.
  • Choose a sturdy support for your tank. Remember water weighs over 8 lbs. per gallon.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight and away from drafty heat or air conditioning.
  • Install a lid or mesh screen to keep your Betta from jumping out.

These are just a few things to be considered in the care of Betta fish.
